Wednesday. Hump day: a normal day by most standards, yet a day adrift in the decidedly abnormal ether of this last month of 2012. December is a tricky one, as months go. Amidst all the celebration, gifts, holiday cheer, and other assorted merriment, December carries with it a lot of pain.
I finished a painting today (well, tonight actually). It was the first one in a long time that I felt good enough about to actually sign and decide was “done”. I painted it for my mom, for Christmas. I owed her; from something like two Christmases ago. That fact is not really important however. The important thing is that I was able to put brush to canvas and create something that I believe is beautiful. It’s no Monet, nor is it Kandinsky or Basquiat or even Rothko, but it is my art. What is important is that, it is because of her that I can, or ever thought to, put brush to canvas. The best present (Christmas or otherwise) I ever received was creativity, and it was a gift from my mom. Colored pencils, sketchpads, watercolors, and construction paper were ubiquitous items in my childhood home.
As we give and receive gifts next week, I like to imagine that the gifts I’ll most appreciate are the intangible ones that I’ve been given throughout my life, not just at Christmas. I love those gifts the most because they are the ones that can’t be returned, never get old or boring or worn out, or even uncool. They become a part of you. I’ve lost a lot in my life - a brother, a father, grandfathers, and more friends than I like to think about – and this month is always one of the toughest of the year, because it sucks to be reminded that there is always going to be something or someone missing at a family holiday gathering. December is a tricky one, as months go. Balancing joy with sadness; it is part of the human experience. Luckily, we are given presents that help to balance, and my gift has helped to create something special for the person who gave the gift to me.
